Lipspeaking

Lipspeaking is a communication service for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people who communicate through lipreading and speech.

A lipspeaker is a hearing person who has been professional trained to be easy to lipread.  The lipspeaker silently relays the spoken message to the lipreader, reproducing the sound, flow, rhythm and stress of the speaker.

Lipspeakers will also use facial expression and natural gesture to support the message, and, where requested, fingerspelling and/or Sign Supported English.

Lipspeaking works especially well in interactive settings, such as networking sessions or event tours.  For medical appointments, where there is limited set up time for captioning equipment, a Lipspeaker is a good option.

As a Level 6 BSL signer, I am able to offer Sign Supported Lipspeaking.  Both Lipspeaking and Electronic Notetaking support can be provided at the same event, if the client feels one is more suited to a particular activity.

Lipspeakers work in a variety of domains, and are invaluable at:

  • events with multiple or unfamiliar speakers
  • interactive workshop or breakout sessions
  • guided tours
  • workplace orientation courses
